The State

The State is a three-unit building in San Diego's Little Italy neighborhood conceived and built by Architect and Developer Jonathan Segal, FAIA. The State was originally built as a home for Segal and his family. To finance the project, Segal designed three units instead of just one house on the modestly-sized corner lot. He sold the two smaller units to friends. The State's three units create versatility and flexibility and are meant to be convertible housing that can grow and shrink as the owner needs it to. With a limited budget in mind, Segal used only the most basic materials, including stucco, mostly stock windows for the exteriors, and plywood and concrete inside.
